答え Generally speaking, we, BUNSEIKAKU, are a "Printing Company", and position ourselves as an "Environment Communication Company".
This is because we offer not only printed materials but also extensive tools and many kinds of planning regarding communication. Furthermore, we present proposals to allow customers to reduce the environmental burden in all processes including plate making, printing, book making, and delivery as well as material selection when planning, producing, and manufacturing printed materials.

About waterless printing
質問 What is waterless printing
答え The main printing is usually printing with use of water in which ink is transferred on paper by taking advantage of the repulsion action between water (or organic solvent, usually called dampening water) and oil-based ink, while waterless printing does not use any dampening water. This is why, waterless printing has been spotlighted in this field as most environment-friendly printing method with which harmful waste liquid is not discharged at all.
Because transferred ink does not run thanks to no dampening water, extremely fine portions can be reproduced, and accordingly we can provide customers with remarkably fine printing resulting in customers' complete satisfaction.
In waterless printing, the plate features repulsing oil-based ink and transferring ink on paper because the oil-repulsive silicon gum layer of the plate plays a role of dampening water in the conventional printing. Waterless planographic plates that have been manufactured by Toray Industries, Inc. since 1976 have become mainstream for this plate.

答え In fact, the costs for plates and ink are high to a certain degree, but the disposal cost for wasted developer and other expenses such as dampening water cost can be eliminated. Furthermore, the productivity with waterless printing is higher than that with printing with use of water according to the research of Toray Industries, Inc. (Refer to the Web site of Toray Industries, Inc.) We are working on cost reduction to pass the savings on to our customers maximally.
We equate waterless printing with printing with use of water (see the Web site of Toray Industries, Inc.) in the aspect of total cost. Of course, we offer waterless printing at the same price as normal printing with use of water.

質問 What are the merits of waterless printing?
答え The greatest merit of using waterless printing is that harmful waste liquid (mainly isopropyl alcohol: one of the chemical substances required appropriate management specified by Tokyo Metropolitan Government) is not discharged at all. The developer in the developing process is nonpolluting.
Silicon gum made of natural materials is used for the plate, and accordingly water drained after use of the plate does not generate hormone-disrupting chemicals.
What is more, volatile organic compounds, called VOC, is hardly generated resulting in clean working environment, and the introduction of waterless printing for the printed materials allows users to be relieved from troubles of allergies such as sick building syndrome.

質問 Can any of printing companies use the Butterfly logo?
答え If you become a member of the US-based WPA (Waterless Printing Association), you can use Butterfly logo on the items printed with waterless printing. The Japan WPA was established, and they are working on making rules and regulations including application rules and treatment rules to prevent improprieties. Please contact the Japan WPA for further information.

質問 What about the future of W2 ink (water washable) that has been jointly developed by the manufacturer and BUNSEIKAKU and the merits of W2 ink?
答え The heaviest environmental burden is generation of VOC in printing factories.
When the roller section of a printing machine is washed, a highly volatile cleaning solvent is normally used, and then VOC or harmful waste liquid is generated. However, if W2 ink is completed, water-based cleaning liquid can be used for washing off, and then almost all VOC and harmful waste liquid can be eliminated. This is why, we believe that the completion of W2 ink makes a substantial contribution in the environmental impact at printing sites. It may be no exaggeration to say that standardization of introducing waterless printing and W2 ink is a way to reduce environmental burdens much further.
